Step 1
When I started this journey into art, I had no intention that it would become anything else than some random doodlings. But then as I started to get more into it I though “wait a minute, there is something bigger than just this” I have always like fixing things and making things throughout my life but didn’t really embrace it properly as I was always too busy. Then came a time later in life when I could start thinking about enjoying that thing I had suppressed for so long. I don’t this is is a particularly uncommon event in peoples lives.
Probably to many, my idea of art and being an artist is not the correct, pure, traditional sense. But I feel that all the things one makes is a form of art. It might even be said that picking your outfit for the day is a expression of art. But making a bit of furniture, creating a print, or designing a logo is definitely art. Show encompassing all of this I decided that I needed an umbrella for it all to fit under.
It’s funny how things come to you in the least expected times. I must admit that the first round of coming up with potential names was pretty naff. But then lighting stuck and I had the name. It is certainly not unique, but it does have multiple meanings. I don’t pretend to be a graphic designer although my father was one so I may have picked up a little from in in the past. But I do follow the creed that simplicity is the name of the game. Just look at the biggest brands in the world and how simple there logos are.
Step 2
Get something out. Well its not as if brands never change there logos but on the whole they have a basic design. That is something I feel that once I have have some time with the visuals I can make some changes and at that point I will get the professionals in. I know I am influenced by what I see and the things that I levitate to, who isn’t! But selecting the thing that fits the words is just as important as just getting a nice image. There are plenty more places to find out about this combination and I won’t bore you with a diatribe on that subject.
So to get something out does take a bit of thought but it does need to happen. As I am someone who will tweak things to death I have learnt its better to get started than to try to get the perfect design. I have actual looked at the Skillshare courses on Design and taken a lot away from the Aaron Draplin courses, But I am still just scratching the surface.
But I have come up with the logo I am happy with for the time being.
Step 3
With the design decided, what next? Well to flesh it out so to speak. At the moment I am using an iPad for art works as it is just so much easier to use. The pencil really got me started back in 2017. But I find I can doodle a design in Procreate and the create the vector art from there. With so many different places and formats to use now, I also use shortcuts to automate the different file sizes.
No I’m ready to head forth into the world. Something to recognise me by. My parents generation don’t understand the need for any of this. That’s because art was a “vocation” whereas now it’s a business. They thought money was a dirty word. Now we see it as a way to support us. The democratisation of art via the internet has led to a very different way of promotion. Now we all need our personal brand.
I personally think it’s a good thing and something that shows our persona via the imagery we use. I look at it as just being an individual art company in the same way a plumber or baker have their identity. So onwards..
Until the next one..
